Exhibition at the Zentrum Paul Klee 28.8.2021 until 22.5.2022

Paul Klee is generally perceived as withdrawn from the world and a creator of fantasy worlds. The exhibition counters this perception and shows how the ironic façade of his works often hides a political or social dimension. The political aspect on which Klee reflects in this exhibition is how humans coexist and organise themselves. With a ‘zoological eye’, Klee views humans as an alien species to be studied and asks about the nature of human society. Many of Klee's works feel distinctly theatrical. As if on a stage, Klee creates people who are in tense relationships with each other. In response to his work, BewegGrund, a Bernese company of dancers with and without disabilities, entered into a dialogue with Klee’s drawings. Choreographers Lucía Baumgartner and Susanne Schneider, together with 33 participants, conceived and created six choreographies resulting in cinematically staged dance images that are integrated into the exhibition as video projections. www.zpk.org

The work of BewegGrund is characterised by an experimental approach to body, movement and dance and a focus on reducing choreography to the essential. The range of the people created by Klee are reflected in the diversity of BewegGrund’s dancers. www.beweggrund.org
